PROCEDURES - Capsule Endoscopy Expectations

The day before the procedure:
Eat a normal breakfast and lunch. After lunch - do NOT eat any more solid foods! Clear liquids are acceptable - these include clear broth, juices, jello, popsicles, water ice, lemonade, and the like. Click here [insert link for clear liquid diet]. Do not eat anything after 10 pm. Do not smoke for 24 hours prior to your capsule endoscopy. Do not take any medication (at all) within two hours of your procedure.

The day of the procedure:
Once you arrive at the office, you will again review the procedure with the doctor or nurse. A series of leads (stickers) will be attached to your abdomen. These leads will attach to the data recording device which will attach to a vest that you will wear. The data recording device is small (about the size of a Walkman). Once all the equipment is set up, you will swallow the capsule with a small sip of water. You can then return home.

Periodically over the course of the day, every 15 minutes or so check the recorder to ensure that it is still working. There is a small green light on top of the recorder that should blink every second. If it stops blinking, call Donna immediately at 856-751-2300 extension 230.

After taking the capsule, do not eat or drink anything for the next two hours. After two hours, you may have clear liquid only. Four hours after taking the capsule, you can have a light lunch (perhaps a small sandwich).

Eight hours after taking the capsule, you return to the doctor's office and remove the data recorder. The capsule itself will pass naturally on its own. Your doctor will review the findings with you at your next appointment.
