CLINICAL TRIALS - Diverticulitis Study
Colonic diverticula are pouches that protrude from the colon. Although generally asymptomatic, sometimes these pouches can become obstructed with stool or debris. This can lead to a tear in the pouch resulting in an infection. This is called diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is characterized by abdominal pain, typically left sided and lower in the abdomen or pelvis. While the most severe episodes can require surgery, minor episodes can be treated with antibiotics.
If a patient has had an episode of diverticulitis, there is a 20% to 30% chance they will have another. Currently, there is no FDA approved medication to prevent the recurrence of diverticulitis. The physicians of Allied Gastrointestinal Associates are participating in a trial to see whether or not a certain medication can do just that and help prevent the recurrence of this condition. The medication, already approved by the FDA and on the market to treat inflammatory bowel disease, is a once-a-day oral medication.
To be eligible for the study, patient need to have had one previous episode of diverticulitis, confirmed on CT scan. Patients who have had surgery on their colon are not eligible. Once enrolled, patients are seen in the office every eight weeks to monitor their progress. All study medications and study visits are fully covered, and patients receive a small stipend to cover their transportation costs.
