Bravo pH Monitoring
Bravo pH Monitoring is a capsule based (catheter free) test used to identify the presence of acid reflux. By using a small capsule attached to the esophagus, pH data can be can be wirelessly transmitted to a recorder worn by the patient. The recorder collects data over several days allowing the physician to evaluate reflux symptoms by determining the frequency and duration of acid flowing back into the esophagus.
Why Bravo pH Monitoring?
The diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or heartburn and its atypical manifestations including chest pain, chronic cough, laryngitis and asthma can be challenging to primary care physicians, pulmonary physicians and gastroenterologists alike. Previous testing to measure the acidity of the esophagus required placement of a plastic catheter through the nose into the stomach. The catheter remained in place attached to a data recorder for twenty four hours.
With the advent of wireless technology we can attach a small capsule directly to the lining of the esophagus. Since it’s catheter free there is increased patient comfort, longer periods of data recording and most important improved diagnosis of reflux disease and its complications. Patients are also able to maintain their normal activities throughout the testing period.
