PROCEDURES - Upper Endoscopy
An upper endoscopy, also called an EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy), is an exam of the upper gastrointestinal tract. This test is commonly used to evaluate problems like ulcers, heartburn, reflux, abdominal pain, weight loss, bloating, poor appetite and swallowing difficulties.
For five (5) days prior to the procedure, you should not take medications like aspirin, advil, aleve, arthrotec, celebrex, diclofenac, ibuprofen, indomethacin, meloxicam, mobic, motrin, naprosyn, naproxen, relafen, sulindac, or toradol. You also should not take plavix or coumadin. Talk with your cardiologist before you stop your plavix or coumadin.
The day before your procedure, you may have a normal diet. However, you should not eat or drink anything after midnight. You may have your medications the morning of your procedure with a small sip of water but do not eat or drink anything else.
